How to Stay Connected with Your Partner During the Holidays

Holidays

Can you believe how fast the year has flown by? Holiday decorations are on the shelves and the pumpkins haven’t even been carved yet… the festive pressure builds for months. Honestly? It can be exhausting. And when we’re exhausted, guess who we tend to disconnect from first? Our partners.

But the good news? You can choose a different experience this season – one that prioritizes connection, calm, and love. Let’s talk about a few intentional ways to stay close to your partner during this busy (and beautiful) time of year.

1. Reset Your Expectations

We all paint a mental picture of the “perfect” holiday—and reality rarely matches it. You can plan all you want, but things will go sideways (they always do!). Give yourself permission to lower the pressure and let go of perfection. The most meaningful holiday moments are often the unplanned ones.

2. Say No

Overcommitting is one of the fastest ways to feel stressed and snappy. It’s okay to decline a party or skip that elaborate tablescape you saw on Pinterest. Say no to wrapping each gift like it’s a magazine shoot. Say no to decorating every corner of your home. Say no to last-minute shopping marathons. Say YES to more space, more calm, and more time with your person.

3. Tune In with Holiday Specials

Remember your favorite holiday movie or show from childhood? Watch it with your spouse! Whether it’s a timeless classic or something new, cuddling on the couch with hot cocoa and a silly holiday film is pure connection. My personal favorite? The Year Without a Santa Claus (yes, Heat Miser and Snow Miser still make me smile!).

4. Slow Down

Stress makes us less patient, less present, and way less fun. When you’re going 100mph, it’s easy to overlook your partner’s needs—and your own. So schedule downtime. Yes, schedule it. Create quiet space to breathe, laugh, and enjoy one another.

5. Count Your Blessings

Need a gratitude boost? Scroll through the photos on your phone from the past year. It’s like a mini highlight reel of love, growth, and beautiful memories. Invite your partner to do it with you. Reminiscing together builds emotional intimacy and reminds you how much you’ve shared.

The holidays can be demanding, but your relationship doesn’t have to be one more thing on your to-do list. By resetting expectations, saying no to chaos, and making small intentional choices, you can stay deeply connected to the one who matters most.

Wishing you a season full of peace, presence, and true connection.

With love,

Michelle
